Senegal’s scandalous soap: can TV drama drive change for women?
The wolof is now deceased since 2 years. This guy lived with me for one year before I was able to get him a job. When he started getting traditional money I told him he had to help with the culture. He claimed he had to send it home to his wife. When his race got wind he was living with me, she started working roots to destroy me and split us up.
She’s grinning — like a child in a candy store or a man in a brothel. “I think Senegalese men are the most beautiful in the world.” If Janina were.
About Me 24 years old and the more I see, the less I know for sure. Check out my bio,’The Dew Scatterer,’ below, for more. Thank you! The other day, I had a really interesting discussion with some younger Senegalese friends on the topic of love, relationships, and marriage. It was a conversation that, if it had taken place in America with a man saying the same things that these Senegalese men were saying, I would have abruptly up and left the table, perhaps due to a strong urge to slap said man across the face, leaving the man to himself, alone with his ignorant thoughts, clearly unwanted and unattractive in all eyes of any female onlookers.
What I learned from this conversation was that if a typical Senegalese man and this is not all-encompassing! Reading this, I know it sounds harsh, but was essentially what the two men participating in this conversation said to me. However, these, they said, were generalizations, and not their own personal opinions at least some of them.

The show takes on not just feminine desire, but also rape, mental illness, male power, domestic violence and the jealousies that arise out of polygamy. It is part of a burst of woman-driven television and film production across Africa in which writers, producers and actors openly assert female sexuality, challenge traditional gender roles and present distinctly African stories to African audiences.
There has been some pushback, from both official sources and everyday viewers. Officials initially banned the film, but it screened to sold-out Nairobi audiences after a judge ordered a temporary reprieve. There is also a woman named Dior who is a lesser player.
northern Senegal lies in Africa’s semiarid Sahel region and is subject to minority of Muslim men do not shake hands with women. In Dating and Marriage.
By: Sarah Mac Dougall. This experience was bizarre mainly due to the stark contrast between the depictions of conservative Islamic leaders and the multi-leveled, ironic, explicit American song about sex. Yet, this scenario illustrates a larger paradox in Senegalese society. Young people in Senegal are all about America. While they might disprove of Americans, American politics, and American global attitudes, American music, American clothing, and American movies are prevailingly popular.
The issue is that stereotypically modern American culture comes with a lot of sexuality. American movies are sexual, American songs are sexual, Americans dress fairly provocatively, etc. However, despite how much these cultural elements are embraced in Senegal, the overwhelmingly Muslim population will very clearly and definitively tell you that they do not approve of promiscuity, marriage without the purpose of having children, or homosexuality.
